GeCoLAB est un laboratoire de l'Université de Liège créé par le Dr Johan Michaux qui développe des recherches sur la biodiversité à partir d’outils génétiques depuis plus de 25 ans.
Ses recherches ont eu comme objectif fondamental de mieux comprendre l’histoire évolutive et la taxonomie d’une série d’espèces de vertébrés. Elles ont également eu des objectifs de plus en plus appliqués tels que mieux comprendre la résistance des espèces face aux changements climatiques, étudier l’impact de la fragmentation des habitats sur la survie à long terme d’espèces menacées, rechercher les facteurs à l’origine des espèces en déséquilibre (régression ou expansion) ou mettre en place de nouvelles méthodes pour effectuer des inventaires faunistiques en milieu aquatique et terrestre à partir d’outils génétiques.
Ces recherches ont été développées sur un large spectre d’espèces, reprenant notamment de nombreux mammifères aquatiques ou semi aquatiques (ours polaire, marsouin commun, vison d’Europe, vison d’Amérique, castor européen et castor canadien, loutre européenne, desman des Pyrénées, musaraigne aquatique, campagnol amphibie,…) mais également des amphibiens ou des poissons.
Johan Michaux est notamment membres des conseils scientifiques des plans nationaux d’action (PNA) français pour la conservation du vison d’Europe, du desman des Pyrénées ou encore de la loutre Européennes. Il est également membre du conseil scientifique du Conservatoire des Espaces Naturels pour la région Occitanie (France). Il est également membre actif de l’association de protection de la nature Natagora en Belgique.

Notre différence par rapport à d’autres laboratoires ou sociétés de séquençage ?
Par notre expertise à la fois dans le domaine de la génétique mais également en tant que spécialistes naturalistes et écologues, nous ne vous proposons pas uniquement un travail de prestataire de service rendant une liste d’espèces, mais nous pouvons également vous aider dans l’interprétation des données obtenues, la mise en place des protocoles de collecte de matériel biologique ou encore le développement de projets concrets d’inventaires de la biodiversité ou d’études d’espèces patrimoniales.
Par ailleurs, notre laboratoire possède une base de données génétique de références privée unique et développée en collaboration étroite avec les bureaux d’étude Biotope et Aquascop. En contraste à l’utilisation seule des bases données publiques, nos bases de données privées permettent une identification génétique beaucoup plus précises de nombreux groupes de vertébrés (mammifères, poissons, amphibiens, invertébrés) vivant en Europe mais également en Afrique Centrale et en Amérique du Sud.

Lise-Marie Pigneur, Adrien André, Johan Michaux, Alix Attaque et Hellyne Reinertz
Johan Michaux, Docteur en Sciences de l’Université de Liège, directeur de recherches au Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique, est directeur de GeCoLAB et spécialiste de l’utilisation des outils génétiques pour l’étude de la biodiversité depuis plus de 25 ans. Il est l’auteur de plus de 160 articles scientifiques de niveau international portant sur l’étude de nombreuses espèces de vertébrés (mammifères, oiseaux, poissons, amphibiens) et d’invertébrés (différents groupes d’arthropodes). Au-delà de ses recherches scientifique, il consacre une partie de son temps à des activités de vulgarisation scientifique, notamment pour la télévision nationale belge (RTBF).
Lise-Marie Pigneur, Docteur en Sciences biologiques de l’Université de Namur est spécialiste des espèces exotiques envahissantes. Elle a consacré sa thèse de doctorat à l’étude génétique d’un genre de palourdes asiatiques invasives (Corbicula spp.). Son post-doctorat, au sein de l’Université de Liège, s’est focalisé sur 3 espèces de mammifères semi-aquatiques ayant des populations en expansion en Europe, le Castor européen, le Vison d’Amérique et la Loutre européenne, sur base d’outils génétiques. Son expertise au sein de GeCoLAB concerne en particulier les analyses phylogénétiques, l’utilisation des microsatellites et SNP, les approches de metabarcoding par NGS et la cartographie (outils SIG)
Adrien André, Docteur en Science biologiques de l’Université de Liège, a effectué sa thèse de doctorat sur l’expansion géographique de Peromyscus leucopus au Canada, suite au réchauffement climatique, en collaboration avec l’université McGill à Montréal. L’objectif de sa thèse a notamment consisté à mettre au point une méthode basée sur l’utilisation du séquençage nouvelle génération pour détecter toute une série de pathogènes, dont la Borrelia, l’agent responsable de la maladie de Lyme. Le Dr André est par ailleurs bio-informaticien. Son expertise a permis d’installer l’ensemble des pipelines et scripts informatiques, outils essentiels pour l’analyse des millions de séquences d’ADN provenant des technologies NGS.
